Biography

Ian Robertson was a tall, fast and lean fullback/winger who enjoyed one season in Wallaby gold. A point-scoring phenomenon for his Eastwood club, Robertson was born in Sydney and educated at Marsden High School.

In 1975 Robertson was selected in a powerful Sydney side to take on Japan. Starting on the left wing, Robertson set the trend when he scored from a try from the first ruck after just 30 seconds. It was a sensational start for Robertson who went on to score four tries in the match. That effort saw him called up to make a Test debut against Japan at Ballymore and he celebrated with two tries. He acquitted himself well, gathered in some challenging passes one of which he dragged down single-handed to race away and score the first of his two tries.

Unfortunately Robertson missed selection for the Sixth Wallabies when Monaro fullback Mick Fitzgerald played strongly in the final trial to join Laurie Monaghan, Paddy Batch and John Ryan among the outside backs in the squad.

Highlights

Robertson won his first Test cap on the left wing in the 1st Test 37-7 victory over Japan in Brisbane. He retained his spot for the 2nd Test, 50-25 win at the S.C.G.
