Grassroots rugby gets a boost in Orange

Before the Classic Wallabies took on the Central West Barbarians at Endeavour Oval, Orange on Saturday, over 200 youngsters were treated to a free skills clinic with the Classic Wallabies, courtesy of Macquarie Sports.

An integral part of the Classics Regional Tours, the Macquarie Sports Kids Skills Clinics aim to engage with children in communities around Australia. These free clinics provide a fun and inclusive environment for children to interact with their sporting heroes.

In the almost 2 hour long clinic the kids participated in 8 skills sessions, with Classics players teaching them attacking and defensive skills including ball in hand drills & tackling techniques.

“It’s really important that we engage in grassroots rugby and those fundamentals are what we tried to show the kids today” Classic Wallaby Mark Gerrard told RugbyAU after the clinics.

If the participation from young girls in Saturday’s clinic was anything to go by, the future of female rugby in the Central West region is very strong. Gerrard said “I was quietly surprised in their engagement in it and they actually have very good skills for that age group, that’s something that I’ve been really impressed of today.”

Former Wallaby Dean Mumm agreed with Gerrard, “It was great to see a mix of boys and girls and it was great to see a whole bunch of girls from the Central West getting in there and ripping in”

At the end of the clinic, Batyr ambassador Pat McCutcheon spoke to the kids and their parents about the importance of smashing the stigma surrounding mental ill health and empower young people to reach out for support as part of the ‘Get Talkin’ Tour’. To close out the mornings activities all kids treated to a free sausage sizzle and footy courtesy of Macquarie Sports, a signing session with the players and a special visit from Wally the Wallaby.
